"(9/30/11) On their radio program today, Matt Barber and Shawn Akers of Liberty Counsel (the rightwing evangelical law firm and ministry) threatened an "all-out" Christian boycott of e-commerce business PayPal over what they described as "discriminatory" and "bigoted" treatment of several Christian ministries. Barber, an attorney who is the firm's Director of Cultural Affairs, said, "I guarantee you if they continue with this discriminatory anti-Christian policy which is bigotry, pure and simple, if they continue with this, there will be a mass, uh, I don't want to call it a boycott, but people, Christians, across the country, across the world, will be encouraged through a very wide range of Christian and pro-family organizations, to no longer do business with PayPal." Shawn Akers, Liberty Counsel's Public Policy Analyst, agreed (you can view a video of this at left).
So what is this bigotry that has the Liberty Counsel attorneys so upset? PayPal has decided not to process money transfers to 4 ministries that promote (wait for it) bigotry against gay people. Some of the names of these ministries may sound familiar to you. They are:
Dove World Outreach Center, a Florida-based church whose pastor, Terry Jones, is most famous for his widely-publicised threats to burn the Qu'ran. That's not why PayPal is blocking them though. It's because of political activities against gays and statements like "homosexuality makes God throw up." Nothing much really; just the kind of actions that earned them a "hate group" designation from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Truth in Action Ministries. Another Florida-based organization. Formerly known as Coral Ridge Ministries, it was founded by the late D. James Kennedy, whose very vocal anti-gay voice is still its legacy.
Two other groups outside the United States also had their websites blocked. They are Noua Drepta, a Romanian ultra-nationalist organization with an anti-gay agenda, and Last Days Watchman, a Christian group in Brazil run by anti-gay ideologue, Julio Severo.
All Out, an LGBT website, sent PayPal a petition with nearly 40,000 signatures on it urging them to to block these accounts. PayPal states that its users “may not use the PayPal service for activities that [...] promote hate, violence, racial intolerance” but, according to All Out, PayPal has become a favorite payment service for anti-LGBT extremists all over the world. They are also seeking action from PayPal against other groups like:
Abiding Truth Ministries. This church is located in Temecula, California. Its pastor, Scott Lively, is famous for his claim that "the Nazi Party was entirely controlled by militaristic homosexuals." You can watch a lively video of Lively appearing on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show here.
Faithful Word Baptist Church (USA) whose pastor Steven L. Anderson has described gays as “sodomites” who “recruit through rape” and “recruit through molestation.”
The Family Research Center (USA) which is known for saying that gay people are predatory and diseased perverts who victimize children.
And others both in and outside the USA."
